Beautiful Spring has arrived with blossoms everywhere, signaling the rise of new life! It makes so many feel lively and joyous again! But with Spring comes also and the "yellow powder" or pollen that covers everything here in North Carolina for a month or so... and for some this means major allergy season!
One of the 3 major universal energies that Ayurveda recognizes as governing the seasons and our bodies & minds, as well as all nature, is the energy of KAPHA (the others are VATA and PITTA).
KAPHA is made up of the elements of Earth and Water.
Right now we are in the Kapha season ... can you tell? Maybe not?
Or maybe you are able to tell when looking more closely at Kapha's qualities!
They are:
HEAVY, COLD/COOL, SOFT, UNCTUOUS/ OILY, SWEET, STABLE/STEADY, STICKY
Not only is Nature showing us the powerful qualities of Water and Earth right now, but we can also feel that same heaviness, stickiness and coldness in our own bodies! This is the time of congestion in the lungs and the sinuses, a time when we feel mentally lethargic, and a time we feel the effects of our “heavier” winter food on our bodies.
YOGA and AYURVEDA have very practical suggestions of how to balance this heaviness and bring lightness, joy, and warmth back and sustain us all the way through to the Spring. As the old adage in Ayurveda says: “Like increases like and opposites balance”, we need to balance our daily routine with the opposite of the qualities mentioned above! That means more heat both for our digestion (through ginger and other warming spices, less sugar as Kapha is sweet in character already, AND no dairy as it is naturally mucus producing) and our bodies through more vigorous movements and heating breath practices.
